Te Herenga Waka Festival 
 

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated engaged with Piripi Smith, Evangaline Wong and Wayne MacGillivray of the Te Matau A Maui Voyaging Trust to plan, lead and organise the Te Herenga Waka Festival, the first of its kind in Aotearoa. Waka hourua and 80 crew members from around the Pacific stayed together at Matahiwi Marae and held educational wananga and activities as part of the Kahungunu Festival 2017. This included coordinating venues, activities, sails, educational workshops and participating in other Kahungunu events being held during the two weeks. We were pleased with the outcome of the events and our relationship with our voyaging partners has strengthened.
